We always say that all the places we travel to are unique, and if we had to decide on just one, it would be difficult. But it is true that in every destination there is always something to highlight and that for one reason or another, enters the “top” of “some list”.
Today we want to talk about 5 trekking and adventure destinations that are in our “top”.
1. Ijen Volcano – Java, Indonesia
When we set course to Indonesia, we knew we wanted to get to this volcano, and although we did not know very well how to do it, in the end we did it. In the middle of the afternoon we went to bed because we had to start walking around 00:00 hours. It was a special night, where the full moon accompanied us at all times illuminating our steps.
The Ijen is a volcano with a turquoise lake inside that makes it unique. Sulfur is obtained from its crater, and you can observe the hard working conditions to which the people there are subjected. But if there is something special about this volcano, it is because the Blue Fire can be observed at night. The “blue fire” is burning sulfuric gas that emerges from the cracks at temperatures of up to 600ºC, being this place of blue flame the largest in the world.
We reached the top of the crater with masks, which are mandatory because the sulfur vapors are toxic. The next step is to descend into the crater. A narrow, stony, dark path where you constantly have to step aside to let the sulfur carriers pass. After observing the Blue Fire, and still at night, we began to ascend to watch the sunrise from the edge of the crater. Undoubtedly, one of our favorite trekking and adventure destinations that will leave you speechless.
2. Gornergrat and Matterhorn – Switzerland
One of the most beautiful mountains in the world, the Matterhorn. The Alps never disappoint, wherever you look they are incredible.
From Zermart there are numerous routes to the mountains. Whether on foot or by cable car to Gornergrat, everyone can see the Matterhorn at least once in a lifetime. The views from this place are incredible, hundreds of mountains show their best, with the Matterhorn being the real protagonist of this part of the Alps.
The descent from Gornergrat to the village of Zermart, is unique, with unparalleled views of the Matterhorn. At all times is present before us making it a must for lovers of trekking and adventure, certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive in which we have done.
3. Peaks Areeiro and Ruivo – Madeira
Madeira made us fall in love with its overwhelming nature. It is the ideal destination for those who want to combine trekking and adventure. A green island that surprised us and invited us to do one of the trekking with the most spectacular views we have ever seen.
The two highest peaks of the island, the Areeiro and Ruivo, connected to each other by an incredible route. And although the slopes and stairs to overcome are a bit hard, the views of the sea, the great cliffs and the constant sea of clouds make it a unique place in the world.
4. Poon Hill – Annapurna, Nepal
Nepal, the country of mountains, the “roof of the world”. After spending a few days in the neighboring country of India, we arrived in Nepal eager to walk and walk through its valleys and mountains. From Kathmandu to Pokhara by bus, many hours of road for the few kilometers that separate these two cities, but the traffic and roads in this country make it so.
In Nepal the mountains are different … and the people are wonderful. For several days and after following a circular route, we went into the most wonderful mountains in the world. We slept in guesthouses, ate the most typical food and enjoyed the company of our guide Chet.
And despite not being able to reach Poon Hill to see the sunrise, due to bad weather, we could for a few moments, enjoy the views of the incredible Machapuchare, sacred mountain that has never been climbed, a destination for trekking and adventure that you can not miss.
We fell in love with Nepal and we know we will be back.
5. Salkantay – Peru
We fell in love with this trek, Peru fascinated us. We knew we wanted to go to Machu Picchu, but what we also knew is that we wanted to walk through the Andes Mountains.
A couple of days acclimatizing in Cuzco, and the expedition to Machu Picchu began. The first night was spent at over 4000 meters above sea level. Breathing at this altitude is already noticeable. Coca leaf and walk. The Salkantay pass, at almost 5000 meters above sea level is hard, but at the same time incredible. The landscapes of this region of Peru are fascinating, its high mountain nature is overwhelming. Reaching the pass is a challenge for everyone. It is achieved, with effort, but it is achieved.
And after observing these incredible mountains, we begin to descend to enter the rainforests that will take us to Aguas Calientes. From here, and after resting for an afternoon, at 3 am we will get up to start our hike to one of the 7 wonders of the world. And after an hour of steep stairs, there it was, Machu Picchu welcomed us to become a traveler’s dream come true.
