Highlights:

  • Shreyas Iyer scored a fifty in the first innings of his first Test, he is 75 for the game
  • Laxman has advised Iyer to take full advantage of this opportunity.
  • According to Laxman, there is no guarantee of Iyer getting a place in the next Test if Virat Kohli joins the team.

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer made his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur on Thursday. He scored a half-century in the first innings of his first Test. At the end of the first day, India scored 258 for 4 in their first innings. Shreyas Iyer is in the game after scoring 75 runs. At the other end, Ravindra Jadeja is in the game after scoring 50 runs.

Despite Shreyas Iyer’s strong performance in the first Test, former VVS Laxman has said that there is no guarantee that he will play in the next Test. However, he advised Iyer to take full advantage of the opportunity. It is worth noting that opener Lokesh Rahul could not play in the series due to injury and this has given Iyer a chance.

Laxman said that Iyer’s place in the team may not be decided after Virat Kohli’s return to the team for the second Test. Iyer put India in a strong position along with Ravindra Jadeja on the first day. Iyer and Jadeja shared an unbeaten 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Laxman said, ‘I want Iyer to make this Test memorable because there is no guarantee that he will be in the playing XI after the return of Virat Kohli. I hope he plays to his full potential and takes full advantage of the opportunity.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar presented the Test cap to Shreyas Iyer at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. In this regard, Laxman said that the Test cap at the hands of Sunil Gavaskar was a great moment for Levi Iyer. Growing up in Mumbai, Gavaskar would have been a role model for Iyer. Wearing a test cap is the biggest moment for any player representing India in Test cricket.
