You must have sometimes seen the advertisement of delicious papad eating rabbit papad on TV. Lijjat has made thousands of women self-reliant and the Lijjat Papad Cooperative Society, which started with Rs 80, is now worth over Rs 1,600 crore. About 62 years ago today, on March 15, 1959, 7 women from South Mumbai decided to start the business of Lijjat Papad together. Prominent among these women was Jaswanti Jamnadas Popat. Delicious is called Lijjat in Gujarati, hence this papad was named Lijjat. Initially the women were Gujaratis but then as the business grew, other women also joined in.


Social worker Chhaganlal Parekh lent Rs 80 to women to start papad business. Women earned Rs 6,196 in the first year from this papad business. The business of Lijjat Papad has crossed the Rs 1600 crore mark today. When Lijjat Papad started as a collective business, initially these women sold only 4 packets of papad to a trader and then the trader who liked the papad test ordered more papads. These women started making standard papads. Gradually the group turned into a cooperative system and needy women above the age of 18 joined the papad business.

The main objective of Lijjat Papad is feminisation. There are currently more than 45,000 women in Lijjat Papad’s cooperative movement. Who runs the whole business. These women are known as Lijjat Sisters. In this business of papad, Purushottam Damodar Dattani Bappa helped Jaswanti sister a lot. Under his guidance, Lijjat Cooperative started manufacturing Khakhra, Masala and Bakery products apart from Papad. Lijjat still pays less attention to papad machines and more to hand made papads. So that women can be helped. Lijjat Papad has maintained its quality over the years. Lijjat Papad won the Economic Times Business Woman of the Year award in 2002. Today Lijjat Papad has 82 branches in 17 states and is sold in countries other than India.
