The first test cricket match between India and New Zealand was played in Kanpur. However, the match was thrilling till the last ball with Ejaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra battling the deadly bowling of the Indian spinners in the final overs to deny Team India victory. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin had brought India closer to victory, but their performance did not lead the team to victory. Shreyas Iyer, who scored a century in the first innings and half-century in the second innings, was declared the player of the match.

India had set a target of 284 runs against New Zealand. New Zealand’s top order beat Team India again but New Zealand’s batsmen could not last long against the deadly bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin. With one wicket after the other, India came close to victory but could not take the last wicket and the team had to be content with a draw. New Zealand scored 165 for 9 against the target of 284.
Earlier, India had scored 345 runs in the first innings with the help of Shreyas Iyer’s century and half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, New Zealand scored 296 runs in the first innings. Due to which India was able to take the lead. India declared their second innings at 234 for seven and set a target of 284 against New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century in the second innings.

New Zealand’s top order clashed
New Zealand lost one wicket against the target of 284 by the end of the fourth day. However, the latter rivaled Tom Latham, William Somerville and captain Kane Williamson. Tom Latham also scored a half-century while batting brilliantly in the second innings. He scored 52 runs in 146 balls with the help of three fours. While Somerville contributed 36 runs. Williamson was able to set but could not play a big innings. He was dismissed for 24 runs in 112 balls. While opener Will Young got out for two runs.

The Indian spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja rocked the fifth day. Ashwin made both the openers his prey. Jadeja then led India to significant success by paving the way with experienced dangerous batsmen like Williamson and Ross Taylor. Also in the final overs, Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee struggled but Jadeja got them both out to take India to victory. But Ejaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra did not allow India to succeed. Jadeja scored four and Ashwin scored three runs. While Akshar Patel and Umesh Yadav got one success each.

In the 90th over of New Zealand’s second innings, Ravindra Jadeja lbw Tim Southee to give India their ninth win. Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra were at the crease then and India needed just one wicket in the next 8 overs. Seeing the bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin, India was on the verge of victory. However, Ajaz and Rachin faced the Indian bowlers and saved the team from defeat. Ejaz scored two unbeaten runs in 23 balls while Rachin faced 91 balls in which he scored 18 not out.
